Atkins or GI Diet?

. Friday, May 16, 2008

Atkins is a high-protein diet, glowingly endorsed by celebrities the likes of Renee Zellweger or Geri Halliwell, who claimed that it was not only effective in helping them slim down, but it would also prevent the pounds for piling back on. It was elaborated by Robert Atkins, a U.S. heart doctor, and its basic principle is eating very large amounts of protein while at the same cutting almost all carbohydrate intakes – including fruit.

For example, a cheese omelet would be ideal for breakfast, lunch would be made up of a cheeseburger with salad and dressing but without the bread, and for dinner, fish with buttered vegetables would do just fine. The popularity of the Atkins diet diminished when it emerged that it had unpleasant side-effects such as constipation and mood-swings. It was also believed to increase the risk of developing heart disease and kidney problems.

On the other hand the GI diet distinguishes between "good" and "bad" carbohydrates and is based on eating only the former type, which releases energy from food and prevents hunger pangs. "Good" carbs are beans, vegetables and wholemeal bread, whereas "bad" carbs include white bread, white rice and refined breakfast cereals. A day's meals according to the GI diet could be made up of porridge with wholemeal toast, lentil soup would make a perfect lunch and spaghetti with meat sauce would be a good choice for dinner. So, what do you think is best?

Settling differences through open negotiations

Be open – Identify what you need and want from the other person. Never assume that the other person knows what you are thinking. In these situations, honesty is the best policy. When you are angry; cool down first before you start negotiating to the other party.

Allow both parties equal airtime – Each side should be given ample time to express what they need from the other party. There is a time to talk and a time to listen.

Be ready to give – After hearing the other person’s side, determine what you are willing to ask and give if that would suffice to the other party. If it is enough, then a resolution is on the way. If not, ask what would make it sufficient.

Achieve a compromise – Make your expectations realistic and do not aim for an ideal situation. A compromise happens when both parties reach an amicable settlement.

Mediterranean Diet Helps Alzheimer's

Perhaps, some of you may already be familiar with the myth of the Mediterranean lifestyle and the many benefits it is supposed to have. For those of you who are not yet acquainted with the basics of this heart-healthy eating plan, here is a quick review, just to give you the basics and get you started. It's more of a lifestyle choice that has to be carefully analyzed, accommodated and adapted to your present choices regarding food, drink and exercise.

Its main characteristics are listed below:

1. Eat large amounts of fruit and vegetables. Inhabitants in Greece for example are known to eat on average seven to eight servings of antioxidant-rich fruit and vegetables.

2. Eat healthy fats such as olive and canola oil, as well as nuts. The interesting part about this diet is that its aim is not to limit fat consumption, but rather to choose the right type of fat to eat. The "extra-virgin" or "virgin" olive oil is a precious source of antioxidants.

3. Eat small portions of nuts, particularly tree nuts, such as walnuts, pecans, almonds and hazel nuts, which are low in saturated fat. Walnuts in particular are an important source of omega-3 fatty acids, which are known to help stabilize the blood vessel lining.
4. Drink moderate amounts of red wine. Drunk moderately, red wine acts like an aspirin and reduces the blood's ability to clot and also contains antioxidants. The red wine intake should be limited to no more than one 5-ounce glass of wine daily for women, and no more than two 5-ounce glasses of wine daily for men under age 65.

5. Eat very little red meat and eat fish on a regular basis. Fish is another major source of omega-3 fatty acids and is a crucial part of the Mediterranean eating plan.

This miraculous effect is the result of the large amounts of anti-oxidants and anti-inflammatory agents that can be found in the foods that make up the Mediterranean lifestyle. Taking into account that this diet is protective for other conditions such as coronary heart disease, heart attack, high blood pressure, obesity and a series of cancers, it seems to make sense to follow this diet anyway, and the diet may also protect from Alzheimer's disease.

What lies on your head could be lice!

1.Your pet can give you lice. Lice are host-specific, so animal lice cannot survive on human blood, and are not the same as human head lice. If your child has lice, he got it from another human being.

2.Lice will jump from one human head to another. Head lice do not fly, hop or jump. They are crawling insects which can spread via head to head contact. You can also get them from using an infected person’s hair accessories, or lying on their beds. Remember though, these are rare because head lice cannot survive without feeding for a day or two.

3.If you wash your hair a lot and have good hygiene, you will not get lice. Whether your head or scalp is clean or not, they will attract lice. There critters are attracted to human blood, not your dirt.

4.Lice are harmful. You cannot get any infectious disease from human head lice. Because of the itching, you may be distracted during activities that require concentration, and you can lose sleep. But you will not get ill. In severe cases, excessive scratching can cause small cuts on the skin and these can get infected.

5.A special shampoo will take care of everything. You need to use both a special lice-removing shampoo (with Permethrin insecticide), and run a fine-toothed comb through your hair to capture lice and eggs. The shampoo must be applied twice, ten days apart. Use a fine-toothed comb daily for at least two weeks.

Unhappy Marriage Can Kill You?

We cannot deny the fact that being lonely pays more for your health than living in an unhappy marriage. For example, for your blood pressure, as shown in the recent study, "That second finding is a surprise because prior studies have shown that married people tend to be healthier than singles. It would take further study to sort out what the results mean for long-term health," researcher said. The investigation was made on 204 married people and 99 single adults.

The study is made with more white, and it's not clear whether the same results would apply to other ethnic groups.

The subjects wore blood pressure recording devices that measured the values of blood pressure at random times over 24 hours. Married subjects also completed questionnaires about their marriage. When data was processed, it appeared that increased marital satisfaction was connected to lower average blood pressure over the 24 hours and during the daytime compared to single people, while low marital satisfaction was connected to increased average blood pressure compared to the same category.

During the daytime, the average value of marriage-stressed spouses was about 5 points higher, achieving values considered not-healthy, the next stop towards hearth issues, forecasting heart attack and stroke. "Few studies of the risk for high blood pressure have looked at marital quality rather than just marital status," researcher said, that is involved in heart disease and high blood pressure investigations.

Partner's personality cannot be changed, but researches show a person's degree of satisfaction with their marriage is a key influence in their health.
